GUIDANCE CORNER NEWSLETTER
1.) Get Crafty
When their holiday break begins, get your kids in the holiday spirit by helping you decorate with crafts made together. Purchase plain stockings and craft supplies such as glitter, embellishments, and markers. Allow each child to design their own unique stocking to fill with goodies.
2.) Cook with Kids
Recruit the help of your children in baking delicious holiday treats. Build a gingerbread house together or bake and decorate cookies. Younger children can help with hand mixing, decorating, and of course eating!
3.) Play Outside
Get out and enjoy the weather. Try ice skating or visit a local cafĂ©’ or restaurant and grab a cup of hot cocoa.
4.) Learning Can Be Fun
Just because school is out for a couple of weeks doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. Keep your kids learning with educational tools and activities during the break. Have your child complete math problems and word searches.
5.) Indoor Creativity
Too chilly to go outside? Let them build a fort in the bedroom or the living room. Collect all the sheets and blankets you can find, attach the sheets to each other with clothespins and knots and drape them over chairs and other furniture. Spend the night in the fort as a family telling stories and playing games.
6.) Play Games
Host a family game night with your children. Enjoy the company of your family and make lasting memories. Play games like charades, Pictionary and Monopoly.
Progress Reports go Home Monday December 3rd
Progress reports go home at the end fo the day on Monday, December 3rd. Teachers have spent time assessing your
child to determine progress toward meeting or exceeding grade level
standards for the 2nd nine weeks. They have taken the insight
they have working with your child each day and have provided thoughtful comments
to round out the picture of how your child performs.
This is also a good time to set goals with your child for the second semester. If you have any question or concerns, do not hesitate to make an appointment with your child’s teacher. Thank you for your continued support and being a partner in your child’s education.

New Berlin Students Pedge to Live a HERO Life
Friday, October 19, the students at NBE received a special
visit from the Superhero, Omega Man. His
message was simple… Don’t be a Bully - Live a H.E.R.O Life. H.E.R.O stands for
Helping Everyone Respect Others. The students were amazed at his feats of
strength. He bent steel with his mouth, broke a baseball bat over his leg, and
lifted students in the air as he shared his positive anti-bullying message of
compassion and pursuing your dreams. He encouraged
the students to be a dream maker and not a dream buster by bullying others.
Omega Man caught the attention of all the students with his encouraging message
and students left the program understanding the importance of believing in
yourself and making good decisions.

Welcome Back Superheroes
Welcome Superheroes
Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year at New Berlin Elementary. I hope your children had a wonderful summer break with opportunities to grow and learn. Our school continues to be recognized by the state as an “A” school. We have now maintained an “A” status five consecutive years! Congratulations to all our students, teachers, and parents for this outstanding accomplishment.
This year our school theme is Nothing Can Stop NBE Super Learners. We plan to continue to be unstoppable as we soar to new heights. The staff at our school does extraordinary things on behalf of children every day. They are willing to “leap tall buildings with a single bound,“work faster than a speeding bullet” and are “more powerful than a locomotive” when it comes to helping students become successful. Just open the door of any classroom at New Berlin, and you will see a super teacher! Parents you have prepared your children with the necessary special abilities to be successful, and together we make a super team!
During the summer, we’ve had some staff changes. Please join me in welcoming to New Berlin the following staff members: Raney Manning our new art teacher; Mrs. Julie Bott will be joining the second grade team, in first grade Ms. Angela Davis and Gloria Warren. I am excited to announce that Coach P, (Adam Przymylski) will be returning to New Berlin as a 4th grade teacher. In addition, we have a new guidance counselor. Miss Marisa Negron. We are excited to have these teachers join the “teaching league” at NBE.

In Memory of Maggie the Reading Dog
In Memory of Maggie the Reading Dog New Berlin Elementary staff dedicated a plaque to Pawsitive Pets and Linda Tipton, in honor of our Maggie the Reading Dog, who passed away in March. The plaque will be hung in the front office to always remember Maggie, who had come to NBE every Tuesday since the school opened. Not only did some of the kids get to read with Maggie once a week, Maggie and her other dog friends also visited NBE during the Polar Express and the other various Family Nights so everyone could read to Maggie. Linda also often used her own money to provide stickers of Maggie to each and every child that read with her during those nights, and Linda and Maggie always brought books to the Tuesday kids. At the end of their session, Linda would present the kids with a certificate and a photo souvenir which sometimes included a personalized picture of the child reading with Maggie. Maggie also was a popular Celebrity Reader every year during Literacy Week. We will miss our Maggie the Reading Dog, but we are excited to meet our new Reading Pup, Jasper, who will start in August!

FCAT Assessment Begins April 16
Good luck to our third, fourth, and fifth grade students who will be taking the FCAT state assessment starting Monday, April 16.
It is extremely important that your child is present at school each day of testing and that he/she is on time. Testing will begin promptly at 8:45. Students who arrive late will not be allowed to enter their classroom until testing is over.
Here are a few suggestions…
Make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and breakfast.
Avoid making dental or doctor appointments on testing days or checking your child out early.
Try to make the morning of the test a pleasant one. Do not add to your child’s stress.
Remind your child to listen carefully to the instructions from the teacher, to read the directions and each question carefully.
Tell your child to attempt to answer all of the questions on the multiple-choice portion of the test and not to leave blanks. There is no penalty for guessing when a student is uncertain of the correct answer.
Encourage your child to stay focused on the test, even if other students finish early.
Good luck students... you are ready!

Most Valuable Players at New Berlin Reads to the Birds
Principal Reese has started a new program to recognize students who promote teamwork at the school. The Most Valuable Player of the Month ties in with this year's school theme, Team New Berlin—Together Everyone
Achieves More. The MVPs were elected by their fellow students for being respectful, putting forth their best effort, working well with others, and how they value their school work by being a dependable student who is prepared for school.
New Berlin congratulates the following students for being chosen the Most Valuable Players for February: Cierra M., Tyler G., Alyssa E., Trey H., Annelisa O., and Daniel A. These students won a trip to the Jacksonville Zoo with the administration to read to the birds. Students were escorted to the Lorikeet Aviary by a zoo keeper where they were greeted by the birds. The birds were excited to see the students and were very interested in their books. Some of the birds snipped at the books, landed on the student’s heads and arms to get a peek at the pictures. The students had a blast; this activity was definitely “for the birds." Thanks to the Jacksonville Zoo for sponsoring the activity and creating such a great educational experience for the MVPs!

March News
Congratulations to Charlotte Chufo, a New Berlin Elementary 4th grader who was named "Student of the Week" by Duval County Public Schools and whose story was featured on First Coast News in February. Her teacher, Ms. David, says Charlotte loves school and meeting new people and calls her a class leader, adding "I can depend on Charlotte to encourage and mentor the other students" when new students join the classroom. Charlotte's favorite subject is Reading but her least favorite is Math. However, that is not stopping her from her dream to one day be a teacher... or a dolphin trainer!
NBE Pre-K students celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday in March with some special "Cat in the Hat" activities. Teacher Debra Hannah surprised with these adorable shirts that she had made, and the students wore blue hair they made from construction paper. They listened to a reading of The Cat in the Hat and finished their day by watching The Cat in the Hat Comes Back and eating a crazy Thing 1 and Thing 2 cakes made by Mrs. Hannah. The best part of the day was the students making “Thing” hand prints with red and blue paint and googly eyes on white paper. All the creative works from the students were displayed on the bulletin in the hallway.

JEA accidentally cut a waterline in front of the school today that caused the school to lose water service for a portion of the day. Portable toilets and bottle water was delivered to the school. The cafeteria will used bottled water for cooking.
Thanks to the incredible students and staff members for doing such an amazing job today working together as a team! Unfortunately, sometimes things happen that are out of our control.

Science Night January 26 at 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m
Please join us this Thursday evening, January 26 for Science Night. The 4th and 5th grade science projects will be on display in the school cafeteria. Come see the amazing experiments! Winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m.
Oh Seuss! The Science of Seuss Day
Do you know the science behind Seuss? Friday, January 13, students in kindergarten through third grade at New Berlin Elementary combined literacy and science together to find out. Kindergarten and first grade students read the story Bartholomew and the Oobleck and My Many Color Friends. After reading the stories, students made an Oobleck… an experiment that allowed them to see a liquid turn into a solid right before their eyes and a color wheel to show how secondary colors are made. Students in third grade also made an Oobleck and participated in a science experiment from the book The Sneetches.
Second grade students read the story; My Fine Feather Friends and Oh Say Can You Say Di-no-saur?
The students learned about the characteristics of birds, the types of birds in the community, and then used a milk carton to construct a bird feeder. For their second experiment they used plaster and clay to make a fossil. They learned how fossils are formed and the different types of fossils.
Mrs. Jenning's first grade class used the book, Horton Hears a Who. They placed a 'dust speck' on a microscope slide, looked into the microscope, and observed what was there! The students then drew a picture. They also learned about sound.
During the month of January, all NBE students have been working on classroom science projects using the scientific method. Fourth and fifth grade students have been working on their individual projects. Thursday, January 26, the school will host Science Night in the school cafeteria beginning at 6:00 p.m. Science projects will be on display and Science Fair winners will be announced.
