Tips for Parents and Teachers Following School/Community Crisis

Parent(s), Words cannot express my deepest sympathy for the parents who lost their children in the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. I can't imagine how they are coping with the loss. I want to do my best to reassure you that New Berlin, just like every other elementary school in Duval County does have a Crisis Plan in place. Along with the support of the district, we have immediately began to work to out additional measures and precautions to keep our school and all those in the school as safe as possible. Unfortunately, we can no longer have an open campus. All outside doors will remain locked as they have been in the past and we will now keep the front door locked. All visitors will now have to be let in the front door; we are asking all parents and visitors to enter through the front door and to sign in at the front desk. Our front desk staff is ready to handle this. We did receive word that the increased school police presence will be at each elementary school on a daily basis. Below is a PDF file that has tips on what to say to your child after a school crisis. Now that school is back in session your child may need reassurance that school is safe. If you have any questions about our safety plan, please contact the school.

Congratulations to our "Timing is Everything" December Winners

Congratulations to Mrs. White's first grade class and Mr. Summerersgill 3rd grade class, they were the winners for the month of December "Timing is Everything" attendance contest. They were tied for first place. Both classes only had 3 absentees for the month of December and win a Pizza Party. Way to go boys and girls!

New Tardy Tracking Sytetm

We now have a new tardy tracking system at NBE that will allow us to use a student ID badge to quickly scan a student into our school data system when they are tardy. On Friday, students came home with a ID badge attached to their bookbag. This new system is currently being used by many large Duval County Schools and is very safe. The information on the bar-code is unique and can only be used at our school. We have around 50 students tardy daily and it is very time consuming for the office staff to hand write tardies. Now students can get to class quicker and it will be more efficient for the office staff. The ID badge was free, however; if loss there will be a $3 replacement fee. Thank you for your support. Please help us reduce our tardies, by having your child in school on time daily. School starts at 8:25...remember Timing is Everything!

New Visitor Tracking System

We are excited to announce that we now have a new electronic visitor sign-in system. We will begin using the new system on Monday, January 7th. When you visit the school, please make sure that you have a photo ID (preferably your driver's license) to enroll in the system. If you don't have a driver's license, please bring some type of identification. Each time you visit the school, the front office staff will check you in and give you a visitor sticker. This new system will allow us to have a more secure building as well as keep up with our volunteer hours electronically. Currently, we have to add the hours manually, which is very time consuming for our staff. You don't need to make a special trip to the school, just remember the next time you visit to have your identification so that we can enroll you in the system. All visitors will be required to show their ID and enroll. Please make sure that you share this information with grandparents or other family members who may want to visit the school. If you have any questions, about the new system, please contact the school office at 714-4601. Thank you.
